Zip Zimbabwe wide open in this 11-day journey that traverses the country’s mosaic of landscapes. From the thundering majesty of Victoria Falls through the elephant-rich plains of Hwange, into the ancient granite wilderness of the Matobo Hills, and culminating in the remote wilderness of Gonarezhou National Park. This deep-dive experience will reveal the exemplary conservation and community development projects taking place in this region. By journey’s end, you’ll have a deeper understanding of the people, the landscapes, and the rich flora and fauna that define Zimbabwe. You’ll be humbled by this captivating slice of Africa and enriched in ways you can’t yet imagine. This journey is equally suited to smaller and larger groups.
Arrive at Victoria Falls Airport and transfer to the charming Pioneers Lodge, where old-world style meets modern comforts. On your first evening you’ll visit the local theatre to watch Simunye, an outstanding production that blends vibrant music, dance, and storytelling in a passionate performance.Â
Your first full day starts with a sunrise walking tour of Victoria Falls. Your guide leads you through the rainforest paths that wind along the gorge’s edge. Stand at viewpoints where the mile-wide expanse of water cascades into the chasm below, creating perpetual mist and rainbows.Â
With your appetite for jaw-dropping natural wonder satiated, you’ll head into Victoria Falls to visit a variety of craft markets. The day concludes with an exceptional sunset dinner cruise on the upper Zambezi river – an unforgettable few hours, drifting past grunting hippos, basking crocodiles, and wading elephants.
A 30-minute chartered flight takes you to Hwange National Park where you’ll transfer to Camp Hwange. Each of the camp’s elegant permanent tents include a private deck with panoramic views to the camp’s waterhole, a popular drinking spot for predator and prey species.
You’ll enjoy game drives or guided walks morning and evening with professional private guides and three superb meals a day. Morning game drives start at dawn, when predators are still active: lions patrol, leopards slink back to cover, and African wild dogs move in shadow-like grace through the woodland.Â
During the heat of the day, absorb the bush ambience from one one of the camp’s many lounging areas or cool off in the camp’s swimming pool. As the golden hour approaches, you may settle at one of Hwange’s pans watching as elephant families lumber towards the water. You’ll likely see buffalo herds, giraffe, zebra, kudu, and wildebeest. After darkness falls, spotlights reveal the nocturnal wanderers: genets, civets, honey badgers, and hyena.
An hour’s flight takes you south to Bulawayo where you’ll be met for the scenic 45-minute road transfer into the Matobo Hills. You’ll arrive at Amalinda, a spectacular lodge built into the rocks. Here you’ll sink into the ancient rhythms of this remarkable place with morning and afternoon explorations into Matobo National Park.Â
This UNESCO World Heritage Site protects white and black rhinos and also has one of the world’s highest concentrations of leopards and rock art. You’ll experience one of Zimbabwe’s most thrilling wildlife experiences: rhino tracking on foot, following spoor and other subtle signs, with the intent of approaching one or more of these prehistoric-looking giants.Â
You’ll also visit World’s View – the granite summit where Cecil Rhodes is buried and experience the stunning 360° vista across the Matobo Hills that give it its name. After lunch on your last day, you’ll transfer to Bulawayo airport for your 1.5 hour flight north to Gonarezhou.
